On Thursday 30th January, three students from year 9; Albie, Amelie, Bhu, Isla and Natty from year 12, and joint-captains Pedro and Veronika from Year 13 went with Dr Tarassenko to represent Cheney at the 2025 South East Region Philosothon at Magdalen College School. A philosothon is a competitive philosophising competition in which points are awarded by a panel of independent professional philosophers for contributing to genuine philosophical dialogue. Topics covered included fact-checking, lying governments, Plato's forms, and animal ethics.

After practicing and being coached in the format in Philosophy and Theology Club for in some cases three years (and in other cases, two weeks) and having come second by a single point in two previous years, we are very happy to report that this year Cheney beat three other schools, including the hosts, in order to win this competition. Particularly special mentions go to Annie in year 9, who won highest scoring Under 15 overall, and Isla, who won top-scoring Cheney philosopher. This means that we are through to the prestigious National Final which will take place at Eton College in Berkshire in May.
