World Book Day 2025 at Cheney
BackWorld Book Day at Cheney is an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful authors, stories and illustrators who produce the books we love to read. This year, the focus was on reading your own way and the whole school assembly that was shown on the morning of WBD explored how reading can include audiobooks, podcasts and magazines, as well as the traditional paperback. To this end, staff displayed a description of what and how they like to read on their classroom doors too.
Students were encouraged to borrow a book for the Drop Everything and Read events by taking part in the lucky dip. Each student who borrowed a book throughout the week won house points, a much sought after golden ticket or a £5 book voucher for a lucky few.
On the day itself, each year group explored a story through five minute readings at the beginning of each lesson. It was lovely to hear the students being read to and the respect shown to staff was brilliant.
The highlight for many students is the release of lovely new library books all in one go. This year we laid out over 450 new books for students to borrow from 8am (see the photo below). According to the gate staff, there was a stampede through the gate as students sprinted across the yard to be the first ones to borrow a book.
For keen quizzers, the traditional World Book Day quiz took place in the library at break time. This included a “name the Julia Donaldson book and the reader”!
Of course, every day is World Book Day at Cheney as we proudly describe ourselves as a reading school. The 6th March is just a celebration of what we do every day of the year - love reading, love stories, love books!
Finally, we issued over 1000 books over the week to more than 600 different students and we also issued over 4,000 house points to students from across the school, proving that celebrating reading is a whole school initiative.
With thanks to Miss Cullen, our wonderful student librarians and to the whole Cheney staff body for their support.
