Over 100 year 8 students attended two online author talks given in the library by the author SF Said on 13th November. SF is the author of four books for young people and he has won many awards for his writing; he is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

His most recent book, Tyger, is a future classic that explores many themes such as environmentalism, mysticism, colonialism and racism under the guise of a fantastical world and a positive outlook. It is one of my favourite books for younger Cheney readers from the past 12 months and I hope to share it as part of the Cheney Choice selection, which will be launched after Christmas.

At the sessions, SF gave an introduction to Tyger, talked about the background to the story and the reason it took him nine years to write it! We also explored the wonderful illustrations in the book. The main part of each session was taken up by the students asking SF questions and they really stepped up with some insightful and intelligent questions. I was so proud of the students for their enthusiasm and engagement.

With thanks to my colleagues who supported the sessions and to SF himself for giving his time so willingly and freely.

Author visits are worth the work - it is always inspirational to meet the creators of the fantastic books we read!
